Office of Commissioner of Insurance

Office of Commissioner of Insurance

The Office of Commissioner of Insurance was established by Georgia Code 33-2-1 in 1887. The office is responsible for protecting the rights of Georgia citizens in their insurance transactions.

The office is also responsible for monitoring approximately 1,600 insurance companies; licensing some 105,000 insurance agents, and regulating more than 1000 industrial loan offices.

Through the State Fire Marshal Division, the office provides broad-based fire safety education and enforcement of state and federal fire codes.

John W. Oxendine was elected to the Office of Commissioner of Insurance on November 8, 1994, to a four-year term. He was re-elected on November 3, 1998, November 5, 2002 and again on November 7, 2006.

Serving as Chief of Staff for Commissioner Oxendine is Justin Durrance. The Office is staffed by nearly 300 employees.

Since January 1995, the office's Consumer Services Division, which mediates disputes between consumers and insurance companies, has helped Georgians collect more than $150 million in underpaid claims.
