Fire Fatality Reporting

All fire fatalities—whether civilian or firefighter—must be reported to the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Consistent reporting ensures comprehensive data collection, supports trend identification, and enhances statewide prevention strategies and public safety efforts

  • Who Reports

    Fire Departments will coordinate with their assigned State Fire Investigator to ensure that the fire fatality is reported—either by the department where the incident occurred or by the investigator handling the case.

  • Timeline & Method
    • Within 72 hours of the incident, submit the report using the State's required method
    • Update (Effective 3/15/2026)
      • All fire fatalities must now be reported through the Fire Fatality Data Collection Hub provided by the National Fire Marshal's Association. This system serves as a centralized repository designed to help states collect consistent information and support analysis of fatal fire incidents.

    Under Georgia Code Title 25, Chapter 2, Section 25-2-32, all fire incidents - including those resulting in fatalities must be formally reported to the State Fire Marshal's Office using approved methods.
