ATLANTA – Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced today that one person was killed in a Calhoun County fire. The fire occurred on Highway 55 in Leary around 2:54 a.m. on Friday, August 13th. The 81-year-old, 1688-square-foot structure was entirely destroyed by the fire.

“The deceased was found by the Calhoun County Fire Department while extinguishing the fire,” said Commissioner King. “The cause of this tragic event is still under investigation at this time, and our team is assisting the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Calhoun County Fire Department, and Calhoun County Coroner in this matter.”

The deceased was turned over to the Calhoun County Coroner and was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab in Atlanta for autopsy. This marks the 86th death from a Georgia fire in 2021.
