ATLANTA – Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced today that Johnny Lee Higginbotham, 54, was killed in a Habersham County fire on Friday, January 21st.

The fire occurred on Habersham Mills Road in Demorest around 7:37 a.m. and completely destroyed the 30-year-old 200-square-foot camper.

“The fire was extinguished by Habersham County and City of Demorest fire departments,” said Commissioner King. “After extinguishing the fire, the deceased victim was located inside. The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental at this time.”

Commissioner King’s Fire Investigations Unit is assisting the Habersham County Emergency Services, Sheriff's Office, and Coroner’s Office in this investigation. This marks the 16th death from a Georgia fire in 2022.
