ATLANTA – Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King is urging Georgians to practice fire safety precautions following a residential fire in Cornelia.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were requested by the Cornelia Fire Department on Monday, March 24th to examine a residential structure fire. During the investigation, moderate fire damage was observed in one bedroom, including damage to the carpet, walls, and several children’s toys. Following a thorough examination, investigators classified this fire as incendiary in connection with the actions of a juvenile. No injuries were reported in connection with this case.

“Fire safety begins at home,” said Commissioner King. “Taking a few moments to discuss fire prevention can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy. Check your smoke alarms, plan a fire escape route, and practice fire safety drills to keep you and your family safe.”

If you live with children, it is important to teach them the dangers that fire presents. Items like matches and lighters should be kept out of children's reach, ideally in a locked cabinet.

Top Tips for Fire Safety

  1. Check smoke alarms: Make sure there is a working smoke alarm on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and near sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms at least once a month to ensure they are working.
  2. Create and practice a fire escape plan: Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room. Choose a place to meet outside that is a safe distance away from your home.
  3. Practice a home fire drill at least twice a year: Practice a home fire drill with your family during the day and at night. Practice safe methods of escape and getting out in under two minutes.
