ATLANTA – Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced today that Deonte McDowell, 23, of Decatur, has been charged with financial transaction card fraud and insurance fraud.

Mr. McDowell attempted to pay his insurance policy premium through the unauthorized use of a Georgia citizen’s debit card number. The owner of the debit card contacted the insurance company, filed a complaint about the fraudulent charge on his card, and was subsequently reimbursed by the company.

“Our Criminal Investigations Division was alerted to the fraud by Mr. McDowell’s insurance company,” said Commissioner King. “Our investigation further uncovered an additional $38,000 in attempted transactions, including the use of the victim’s personal information.”

Warrants were issued against Mr. McDowell in Dekalb County on July 7th for Financial Transaction Card Fraud and Insurance Fraud. Commissioner King’s Criminal Investigations Division coordinated with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on this case.
