Georgia Fire Incident Reporting System

The State Fire Marshal’s Office as of January 1, 2026 will adopt the New National Emergency Reporting Incident System (NERIS) as the standard for the Georgia Fire Incident Reporting System.

NERIS, The National Emergency Reporting Incident System developed by the United States Fire Administration (USFA) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate, along with FSRI and UL Research Institutes, this system aims to enhance all-hazards reporting for both fire and emergency service communities. The new platform will function as a cloud-based

The GFIRS, Georgia Fire Incident Reporting System gathers comprehensive information on various fire department activities, including data on types of fires, injuries and fatalities affecting both civilians and fire service personnel, as well as details concerning EMS, hazardous materials, wildland fires, and the apparatus and personnel involved.

Reporting to the State Fire Marshal’s Office

Vision

Our vision is a safer Georgia where incidents are minimized through informed decision-making and proactive community involvement. By providing essential data and insights, we strive to support a resilient and prepared society that values and prioritizes fire safety.

Analyzing Fire Incident Reports

By examining fire incident report data, we can identify common causes and incidents. This enables us to design targeted educational campaigns that inform the public about effective fire prevention and injury prevention strategies.

Trends in Emergency Response

The data also reveals trends in emergency response times, highlighting areas where delays may occur. This understanding aids in resource allocation, ensuring that fire departments are adequately staffed and equipped to respond swiftly to emergencies. Furthermore, analyzing human behavior during fires—such as the tendency to use elevators instead of stairs—can help us develop more effective evacuation procedures and improve building codes for enhanced safety.

Integrating Insights for Community Resilience

Incorporating these insights into urban planning and policymaking not only enhances public safety but also fosters more resilient communities. Collaborative efforts between government agencies, fire departments, and the public are vital for the successful implementation of these strategies. By staying informed and proactive, we can significantly mitigate the devastating effects of fires on lives and property.

To support this initiative, the Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire has updated the reporting requirements. Beginning July 1, 2024, all fire departments in Georgia will be required to report or upload all fire incidents to the State of Georgia Image Trend Elite Reporting System on a monthly basis. For example, data for July must be reported or uploaded to the State of Georgia Image Trend Elite Reporting System by August 15. Our office will use this data to generate a monthly report summarizing all state information.

All departments utilizing a third-party reporting system must continue to upload reports to the state reporting system until instructed otherwise.

Utilizing the Free Incident Reporting System: Georgia Fire Incident Reporting System (GFIRS)

If you take advantage of the complimentary incident reporting system (GFIRS) provided by the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire (Georgia Image Trend Elite) to create and submit your initial reports, no additional actions are necessary. This ensures that you fulfill your reporting obligations to the State of Georgia.

However, if you are using a third-party reporting system for incident reporting or have acquired your own Image Trend Elite License, it is essential to adhere to the monthly procedures for uploading your data to the Georgia Image Trend Elite Reporting System.
